Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United

There has been an elephant in the room all season. It was easy to ignore it while United were winning and throwing silver cups over their shoulders back onto the pile. Now we must face up to the reality. The team has not put in a really good performance all term and finally we have been shown up for it.

In truth I always hoped it would be just around the corner but it never arrived and, spectacularly, any hint of it vanished without trace on Wednesday evening. Barcelona fully deserved their victory and frankly made us look like stone-age mugs.

This was not the neo-tactically adept Fergie at work. The team looked like a series of doodles on a piece of paper followed by the words “that’ll do”. Who can blame him. We have won so much this season without hitting anything like top gear, why not think it could work one more time in Rome. It didn’t. At all.

I feel very much like I did after the spanking we received in the San Siro two years ago at the paddled hands of AC Milan. Without any positives to dwell on. But, you know what, I am wrong.

Much like in that game United faced a team of great players putting in the performances of their lives. We have won the league, which I think we would all have picked as the most important trophy at the start of the season, and, well, we have our health.

Barcelona were outrageously good and our players just didn’t turn up. I think we all still feel, despite the recent success, there is a Roy Keane/Bryan Robson shaped whole in the midfield. Hargreaves should be back next season and that will help things along enormously. He, maybe more than any other, is the player we really missed in Italy.

This is not the time to change jobs, leave the wife, sell all the players and start again. Simply, we have been beaten by a better team. In all honesty I felt our players were getting a little hubristic in the build up to this one so maybe this jolt will do them the world of good.

The season is over, we have done well, now it is time to start ignoring those Ronaldo headlines.

Giggs forgets Rome and targets third final

Giggs thoughts have already turned to a third final

Ryan Giggs believes defeat in this year's Champions League final will serve as motivation for Manchester United and the 35-year-old is already targeting a third consecutive European Cup final next season.

United arrived back in Manchester on Thursday after relinquishing their European title in Rome after being soundly beaten by Barcelona and, while Sir Alex Ferguson will waste no time analysing what went wrong and attempting to find solutions, Giggs has already set a new challenge for his team-mates to achieve.

''Great teams and great players always look forward to the next challenge and we are going for a third Champions League final,'' said the Welshman. ''No one likes to experience this kind of feeling and we must use that as motivation next season.''

Ferguson and the United players have been magnanimous in defeat and admitted that Barcelona were the better side at the Stadio Olimpico, with a clear edge in all areas.
It is not the way Giggs intended to begin his summer holidays and presents a marked contrast to the jubilation they experienced 12 months ago after beating Chelsea in a penalty shoot-out in Moscow.

But, while the veteran winger is as disappointed as anyone by United's uncharacteristic failure to perform, he insists there are moments to cherish from the campaign as well.

''It has been a fantastic season and we must not forget that. We have achieved so much,'' said Giggs. ''All we have done is fall just short at the final hurdle in the Champions League. We are still a great team and we have great players in that dressing room.''

Whereas this season history beckoned in Europe (with the ultimately doomed attempt to become the first team to retain the European Cup since it was reinvented as the Champions League in 1992), next year it will be in the league.

Having drawn level with Liverpool on 18 league titles this term, Giggs knows one more - which would be his 12th - would not only allow the Old Trafford outfit to overtake their north-west rivals, it would also see them become the first side in English football to win the championship four years in a row.

''To win three Premier League titles on the trot is an unbelievable thing to do,'' said Giggs. ''Now we must look to make it four.''

Tevez and Berbatov to be benched by Sir Alex?

Sir Alex will put Cristiano Ronaldo up front

A leading British newspaper claims to have discovered Sir Alex Ferguson's team for next Wednesday's Champions League final - and there's no place for either Carlos Tevez or Dimitar Berbatov.

The Sun claims Manchester United will field the same team which secured a place in the Rome final with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, and that means Sir Alex will opt for the industry of Ji-Sung Park over a second striker.

The only change to the starting line-up will be an enforced one with Darren Fletcher suspended for the red card he picked up against the Gunners.

It means PFA Player of the Year Ryan Giggs will come into the side as he looks to win the Champions League for a third time.

Cristiano Ronaldo will again be deployed as a striker, with Wayne Rooney out on the left, as Sir Alex hopes to utilise the pace of the Portuguese star against a suspect Barcelona defence which is without Daniel Alves, Rafael Marquez and Eric Abidal.

This also suggests that the Red Devils' boss has already decided skipper Rio Ferdinand will be fit enough to play, regardless of whether he gets a run-out against Hull City in Sunday's pivotal final Premier League game.
